Siam2nite had the opportunity to have an exclusive interview with Moguai, shortly before his performance at Levels on 29th January.
You grew up in Germany, completed an education as butcher and studied law. Today you are an internationally renowned DJ & Producer releasing tracks on record labels such as Spinnin Records, Ultra, Musical Freedom (Tiësto) and mau5trap (Deadmau5). How did you get in touch with electronic dance music in the first place and how did you get into DJing and music production?
Actually my older sister introduced me to music and somehow developed my musical taste. She is seven years older and she was always up to date with the newest music on a broad range. The so called “Neue deutsche Welle” (New German Wave) and artists like Falco, Nena, Trio, Joachim Witt with “Goldener Reiter” really got me into it at the age of 10-11. That’s where I also got in touch with Bob Marley and Kraftwerk. I actually started Djing to finance my studies in law. I had once been out to a club in Düsseldorf where they usually played punk rock but they played techno that night and I was flashed by it. That’s how I got into dance music.
You play and produce Electro-, Progressive- & Tech House. How would you describe your own music in just a few words?
Emotional. Rough. Edgy. Different. Hope!
You are the producer behind Platinum awarded albums of artists such as Sugababes & Girls Aloud. As a solo artist you are behind the highly successful track Mammoth (with Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike) who took the dance music scene by storm. What other tracks or remixes would you recommend to someone that is not yet familiar with your music?
I would probably recommend my tracks Beatbox, U know Y, Fatboy Slim – Push The Tempo (Moguai Remix), Champs, Mammoth.
You have played clubs and festivals all around the world. What was the best and the worst gig you ever played and what was the funniest thing ever occurred during any of your performances?
Playing in front of 750.000 People at the closing rally of the Love Parade in Berlin. Money can’t buy that. Once they announce your name and you step out there on stage with that view on the “Siegessäule” in Berlin, in your homecountry in front of that crowd...incredible.
What’s on your agenda for 2015 and what are you currently and focusing working on?
I am currently in my studio in Los Angeles working on a few new singles, I have another collaboration with Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike coming up, I am working on a new track for Lady Gaga, and maybe I will be able to release my third album in 2015.
On 29th January you will perform live here in Bangkok at Levels. Have you visited Thailand before? What can Bangkok expect of your upcoming performance?
I have played a few times here in Bangkok and to me Bangkok is one of the most exciting cities in the world. I love the people and I can’t resist the food. The people should prepare for an energetic, punk rock techno rave & roll show to remember. I am really looking forward to it.
