Exclusive Interview with Tha Trickaz

Siam2nite had the opportunity to have an exclusive interview with Tha Trickaz, shortly before their performance at LUSH on 21st November.

Tha Trickaz is a production & live performance duo consisting of Pho – founder of Dirtyphonics – and DJ iRaize. How did you guys meet in the first place and what made you team up?

We met in school when we were 12 years old, so we grew up together ! Around the age of 17, we first bought Turntables, then came the samplers, the computers. Back then, we just wanted to do Hip Hop Beats ! When we started we never thought we would have a full studio dedicated to music!

You play and produce a unique mix of Bass Music, Dubstep, Trap, Hip Hop and Electro. How would you describe your own music in just a few words?

Definitely Bass music ! All theses styles are our influences and while making music we never have any rules about styles or tempos as soon as we like it. We dig a lot of soundtracks & old vynils samples as well.

What tracks, mixes and/or videos would you recommend to someone that is not yet familiar with your music?

Our remix of Chinese man's "I got that Tune" or "Shoryuken" a collab we did with DJ Kentaro, all these are free on our Soundcloud !If you wanna see a Live video of us you can check "No Rescue " Video on Youtube".

What are you currently working and focusing on? What’s on your agenda for the near future?

We have lots of collaborations tracks on the way with 12th Planet, Antiserum, Etc Etc, Apashe, Dj Kentaro … All these tracks are coming beginning of next year !We also work hard on our free music label OTODAYO records which just celebrate his 1st Birthday!

What was the best and the worst gig you ever played and what was the funniest thing ever occurred during any of your performances?

When we started touring in 2007, we went to a festival in France, right before we played there was a rain shower, the organisators didn't expect that so there was nothing to protect the instruments or the sound system. We built a really bad protection with paper trash and spent the whole live swiping our samplers with towels, playing in front of 1 people ! It's hard to say which one is the best but we'll say Techno Parade which was a month ago, there was 360 000 people dancing and raging in the street of Paris!

You live in Paris, the capital and most populous city of France. What can you tell us about clubbing and nightlife there? Do you have any nightlife related suggestions for first-time visitors?

There's always been a busy nightclub scene in Paris, and most of the major electronic artists come here which is great ! If you like Bassmusic you can go to "Le Yoyo" or "La Machine du Moulin Rouge" is a great new club

You both have Vietnamese roots. Besides being well adapted to the western culture, what aspects of your personality do you ascribe to the Vietnamese/Asian origin?

When we started making beats and sampling, we just went digging the vietnamese music that our parents listened ! And we grew up watching a lot of Japanese animes and those soundtracks still remains in our heads ! We started touring in South East Asia in 2010 and since then we come back every year !

On 21st November you will make your Thailand Debut as headliner of LUSH at Sofitel SO Bangkok. Have you ever visited Thailand before?

We have visited Thailand in the past but not as Tha Trickaz so we're really happy to come back there, being able to play our music and share it!

Your live performances include sampling from vinyl, scratching, analog instruments and MPC real time drumming. What can Bangkok expect of your upcoming performance?

We just want to bring lots of energy, sweat and vibes, we wanna make Bangkok rumble and we can't wait!
