T.Williams Shares Start in the Producing World, His Remix for Airwolf’s “Chasing You”, and His Plans for the Rest of 2018
British DJ/producer T.Williams has a whirlwind couple of years ever since his emergence into the scene back in 2010. One of his more recent accomplishments includes the launch of Independent Conch Records, a joint collaborative effort with Julio Bashmore. The label aims to promote underground cross-genre music across a wider audience. Williams also put out an EP on renowned New York house label Strictly Rhythm, with “Together” reaching a top ten spot on the Traxsource chart. We had the pleasure of interviewing him ahead of his show in Bangkok this coming 31st of August. Read on to find out his start in the producing world, his remix for Airwolf’s “Chasing You”, and his plans for the rest of 2018.
You've been producing since the age of 12 - what was it that got you into producing in the first place?
I've basically always been interested in making my own music from very young as my family always had an organ and/or a piano in the household because of my older siblings learning to play. But the turning point as to when music production really happened was when of my best high school friends Kuljit Sokhi hooked me up with a copy of Cubasis. From that moment on I was always attempting to produce music to put on tape to bump on my way to and from school.
Tell us about your earlier days as a grime producer and how it has transitioned into house music. You’ve put out a trilogy on the Sodality EPs, will there be a part four?
The transition from Grime to House was pretty seamless for me as I it all stemmed from there being not many grime parties to go to and house music races filling that space. Ended up going to more and more house raves around 2005/6 which culminated in me taking a few years out to begin formulating a house sound and name for myself. Sodality vol.1/2/3 are all basically me expressing musically how I'm feeling and things I'm drawing on currently. So kind of a transition period series. There will definitely be a vol 4/5/6 as I intend to keep creating from a free open minded space for the rest of my career.
If you could collaborate with anyone in the world, who would it be?
I would love to do something with Steve Gurley or anyone from the Anthill Mob. Been super influenced by their music over the years and man if I could connect and create or just have a conversation with any of these 2 step champions it would be a dream come true.
What are you most looking forward to on your upcoming world tour?
I've been looking forward to playing my debut shows in Seoul & Shanghai most. Ultimately I'm going to enjoy it all but there is something about appearing in a city for the first time and getting to take in a fresh culture and sites.
What do you have in store for the rest of 2018 that you're able to share?
What do you have in store for the rest of 2018 that you're able to share?
I've got some really cool tracks that will be released at the end of this year and beginning of next and a Tour in North America to look forward to. Also, we have our 3rd vinyl release on mine and Julio Bashmore's Conch Records dropping in September which is super exciting.
