Exclusive Interview with Sweater Beats

Sweater Beats is an LA-based Filipino American DJ and music producer, who has been featured on Red Bull Studio, Boiler Room and Mixmag Lab.

Siam2nite had the opportunity to have an exclusive interview with Sweater Beats, shortly before his performance at Live RCA Bangkok on 17th February.

Where are you answering these questions?

Currently I’m at my hotel in Singapore.

You are a LA-based DJ and producer. How did you get in touch with electronic music in the first place and how did you get into DJing and music production?

I used to play guitar in emo and rock bands back in high school, but when everyone left my hometown I started making beats on the computer so I could have something to play over. Ever since then I got more into production and discovered all sorts of electronic music.

How would you describe your own music, what is distinct about it?

I want to call my music “Adventure Pop.” Its exciting pop music thats a little weirder and quirkier than what you're used to listening to. I think the most distinct thing about my music is the sound palette I try to curate in my songs.

What tracks, remixes or mix-sets would you recommend to someone that is not yet familiar with your music?

If you want to get a good idea of my music, listen to ‘Better’, ‘Cloud City’, and my ‘Weight In Gold’ remix. If you want to get an idea of my general vibe and taste, listen to my Future Feels mix.

What are you currently working and focusing on? What’s on your agenda for the near future?

Currently I’m wrapping up my EP for Big Beat Records. When I come back from Asia, I’ll have a month off to write before I head back out on the road to support Gnash on his tour. This year I’ll be focused on a lot on writing more songs and being more sessions with writers.

What were the best and the worst gigs you ever played and what were the funniest things ever occurred during any of your performances?

Playing Red Rocks in Colorado was definitely one of the more life changing gigs I’ve ever played. But to be honest, I think this tour has some of the best shows I’ve ever played because I had a ton of fun and the people are amazing.

You live in Los Angeles – the second-most populous city in the USA. What can you tell us about clubbing and nightlife in Los? Do you have any nightlife related suggestions for first-time visitors?

There’s always something going on in LA, whether it's DIY warehouse parties or club nights you’ll find something cool to go to. For first timers in LA, go to a Brownies and Lemonade show. They are good people and they put on some of the best shows in LA. Personally though, my nightlife consists of being in the studio.

On 17th February you will make your Thailand Debut at Live RCA Bangkok. Have you visited Thailand before? What can the Bangkok crowd expect of your upcoming performance?

This will be my first time in Thailand! I’m beyond excited. I think the Bangkok crowd can expect to get really sweaty in the club dancing and at the same time feel some emotions because my set will take you there.
