Exclusive Interview with Adana Twins
Adana Twins is DJ and production duo from Hamburg (Germany). They don't pigeonhole themselves to a certain music style and tempo, and mix House and Techno, with influences from Hip Hop and Funk. They are best known for their hits “Everyday”, “Juicy Fruit” and “Strange”.
Siam2nite had the opportunity to have an exclusive interview with Adana Twins, shortly before their performance at Kolour In The Park 2017.
Where are you answering these questions from?
We are about to play a show in Rotterdam, Netherlands in 30 minutes...
You are a DJ and production duo from Germany. How did you get in touch with electronic dance music in the first place and how did you get into DJ’ing and music production?
I started listening to electronic music at the age of 10. I was living close to Frankfurt at the time, the second "techno capital" beside Berlin.
During our time as students, I moved to Hamburg and met Take it Easy and we started to promote parties at our university. At the same time, we started DJ’ing, mostly in small bars in Hamburg's red light district. Shortly after we got into producing music, which changed everything.
You don’t pigeonhole yourselves to a certain music style and tempo. How would you describe your own music, what is distinct about it?
I think it's difficult to describe your own music. We like to play long sets from very slow house/funk to faster techno, taking the people on a long journey during the entire night.
In a way this is being reflected in our music too. Sometimes we produce for the dancefloor and sometimes for an afterhour or a just a chilled house tune.
I think I would love to produce and release at least one track of each genre of electronic music :-)
You are best known for your hits “Everyday”, “Juicy Fruit” and “Strange”. What more recent tracks, remixes, compilations or mix-sets would you recommend to someone that is not yet familiar with your music?
We have been very productive the last couple of months and just finished a track for the Watergate Affairs 2 EP, which will be released on February 20th. There is a new club tune on Solomun’s label Diynamic that will come out this March. I think we will play this one in Bangkok for sure. We also just finished a new 3-track EP for our friends at Watergate in Berlin (our new home-label) that will come out in May. Busy times!! ;)
What are you currently working and focusing on?
In March, we're touring in India, South Korea, Malaysia, Bali, Australia and of course Thailand. We also work a lot on new productions in the studio or while touring.
What were the best and the worst gigs you ever played and what were the funniest things that occurred during any of your performances?
Some of the best gigs we had were in Latin America, especially in Brazil. It feels very intense how the crowd reacts with the music there.
Maybe the worst gig was a cancelled show in Beirut. At the same day, there was a bomb attack in which 20 people died. It was a very sad day and together with the promoter we decided to cancel the show.
You are from Hamburg, the second largest city in Germany. What can you tell us about clubbing and nightlife there? Do you have any nightlife related suggestions for first-time visitors?
The scene is very nice. You have some large clubs like Uebel+Gefährlich as well as some smaller (sometime secret) venues. There are lots of talented musicians and DJs who have a strong impact on the clubbing scene there.
You have performed in Thailand several times already. Did you keep these past performances – and Thailand in general – in good memory? What can the Bangkok crowd expect of your upcoming performance at Kolour In The Park 2017?
Thailand and especially Bangkok was always fun. We love to come here, even for holidays! The friendly people and the local food are simply amazing!
