Exclusive Interview with Hook N Sling
EPIC Entertainment brings the multiplatinum ARIA-nominated record producer, songwriter and DJ from Australia HOOK N SLING for the first time to Thailand! He is best known for his gold-selling track "Take You Higher", his #2 Beatport track Reason (with NERVO) and the #1 Beatport track "Tokyo By Night" and "Momentum" which hit the #1 DMC Buzz Chart spot at ADE.
Siam2nite had the opportunity to have an exclusive interview with Hook N Sling, shortly before his performance at Levels on 16th July.
Where are you answering these questions?
Staying at my managers house for a few days in LA… sitting in his kitchen after dinner doing a few emails and talking to you guys.
You are considered as one of Australia’s most promising producers. How did you get in touch with electronic dance music in the first place, and how did you get into DJing and music production?
I got into music through friends i studied with. We were at the uni studying design but we always used to throw big parties on the weekend and we’d take turns in DJing. A club promoter saw me DJ at one of these parties and asked if i wanted to run my own night at his bar. It was small but it’s where i got to do my own thing. Eventually music became something that i could leave my day job for.
You play and produce a variety of House music styles, but have a focus on Electro- & Progressive House. How would you describe your own music in just a few words?
Thats a hard one, but i like Progressive / Melodic / Electro on the heavy side… I’m also not afraid to mix up tempos and genres.
You are best known for your tracks “Take You Higher” and your collaborative track “Reason” (with NERVO) – both tracks have consolidated view counts of over 10 Million – as well as your tracks “Tokyo By Night” and “Momentum”. What other tracks, remixes or mix-sets would you recommend to someone that is not yet familiar with your music?
Im really proud of the remix i just finished for Galantis…its called Gold Dust. Also my remix for Kaskade - Atmosphere and a collaboration i just finished with Far East Movement called Break Yourself.
What are you currently working and focusing on? What’s on your agenda for the near future?
I just finished a remix for Years and Years - Kings and also working on new Hook N Sling singles.
Looking back over the past eventful and equally successful years, what were the best and the worst gigs you played and what were the funniest things that occurred during your performances?
I just played EDC Las Vegas a couple of weeks ago which was one of my fave gigs of all time. The worst gigs are generally the ones where the promoter doesn’t read the contract and gets the wrong speakers or things don’t work but that rarely happens. If that stuff does happen then i generally go on with the show because i don’t want to disappoint any fans. Some people travel a long way to come to some shows….i don’t want to let them down.
On July 16 you will make your Thailand Debut at Levels. Have you visited Thailand before? What can the Bangkok crowd expect of your upcoming performance?
I've stayed in Bangkok once before for a couple of days but i was only passing through on my way to India. I've never been to a club or been out in the city. Im really looking forward to it! You’ll be hearing all my new remixes plus the new single which I’m working on right now… I’m always testing out new music when i travel. See you guys soon!
