Siam2nite had the opportunity to have an exclusive interview with DJ Felli Fel, shortly before his performance at Insanity Nightclub on June 25.
You are one of the most influential Hip Hop DJs in the USA – in 2008 you were nominated as “DJ Of The Year” at the prestigious BET Hip Hop Awards. You hold DJ residencies in Las Vegas, San Francisco, San Diego and even Japan and you run 2 radio shows on Power 106, the top rated radio station in Los Angeles, which reaches over 2 million listeners daily. You play and produce a mix of Hip Hop, Electro Hip Hop and Hip House. How did you get into DJing and music production, and how would you describe your own sound in just a few words?
I got into music as a kid growing up in Atlanta, GA DJing on my mom’s old turntables. I would describe my own sound as bass music with modern EDM and hip-hop.
You produced hits for 50 Cent, Chris Brown and Akon and also released platinum records such as “Finer things”, “Get Buck In Here”, “Boomerang”, and “It’s Your Birthday” as solo artist, signed of the prestigious So So Def/Island Urban Music. What other tracks, remixes or mix-sets would you recommend to someone that is not yet familiar with your music?
My new record called “BlackOut” featuring Lil Jon, Juicy J, and Tyga, “Have Some Fun” featuring Cee Lo Green, Pitbull, and Juicy J, and “Reason 2 Hate” featuring Ne-Yo, Wiz Khalifa, and Tyga. You can also check out my “sound” mixing everyday on Power 106 in Los Angeles from 5-7pm.
What were the best and the worst gigs you ever played and what was the funniest thing ever occurred during any of your performances and/or radio shows?
My best experience would be my birthday with Nicki Minaj and J. Lo hosting. Trey Songz, Flo Rida, and Ma$e were also there at Greystone in West Hollywood. I can’t say that I have had a bad experience DJing...I have been pretty blessed and fortunate over the years. The funniest experience I have had was when Snoop Dogg brought the entire Dogg Pound crew and smoked out the station and the whole station smelled like weed the next day!
You grew up in Atlanta, Los Angeles & Dallas and live in Los Angeles now. What can you tell us about clubbing and nightlife there? Do you have any nightlife related suggestions for first-time visitors?
Nightlife in LA is pretty amazing; you get to choose between Downtown Los Angeles, Hollywood, and spots throughout the beach cities such as Long Beach and Santa Monica. Often, you’ll see celebrities out and about in the clubs whether it be Kylie Jenner, French Montana, or Chris Brown there seems to be somebody interesting at the clubs. I would definitely recommend hitting up all spots in Hollywood including Supperclub, Greystone, and Playhouse.
You are a member of the respected The Heavy Hitters DJs - a DJ crew that also counts Bangkok’s very own DJ Ono & Djay Buddah as its members. You have performed together in 2012 at Bed Supperclub and in 2014 at Velvet Nightclub. Did you keep your Bangkok performances – and Thailand in general – in good memory? What can the Bangkok crowd expect of your upcoming performance on 25th June at Insanity Nightclub?
Definitely have had great memories both times I have been to Bangkok—so great I don’t remember it ALL lol! Bangkok is always a great crowd and I’m super excited to come back. You can expect to “BlackOut” which is the name of my new song with Lil Jon, Juicy J, and Tyga. There’s going to be a lot of energy in the air that night!
