Exclusive Interview with J-Trick
J-TRICK is an up-and-coming Australian DJ & Producer. He was ranked #31 at the inthemix Top 50 of 2015 in Australia and is one of the most renowned figures of the Melbourne Bounce sound. He has worked with Deorro & Henry Fong and is best known for his track "Rambo".
Siam2nite had the opportunity to have an exclusive interview with J-Trick, shortly before his performance at ONYX RCA on June 20.
You were born and raised in Sydney – the most populous city of Australia – and you are one of the most renowned figures of the up-and-coming Melbourne Bounce sound. How did you get in touch with electronic dance music in the first place, and how did you get into DJing and music production?
I first got into dance music when some of my older friends became djs in some of Sydney’s best clubs at the time. They showed me the basics and used to get me into their gigs (I was underage haha) but once I saw them in action and saw everybody going crazy to their music I was hooked and knew I wanted to become a DJ from that moment.
You play and produce Melbourne Bounce & Electro House. How would you describe your own music in just a few words?
I’d describe my music as energetic and raw! Lately ive been bringing in some influences from Hardstyle into my big room tracks to give them a bit more aggression! When I’m writing my music I try to never allow sections of the track to drag on too much, so I think that helps keep the energy there.
You are best known for your collaborative tracks “Rambo” (with Deorro) – the track was edited by the worlds #1 DJ Hardwell, followed by a #1 overall Beatport ranking – and “Scream” (with Henry Fong). What other tracks, remixes or mix-sets would you recommend to someone that is not yet familiar with your music?
I’d definitely recommend my podcast, the “TRICKCAST” to people who want to hear what my style is as well as listen to my exclusive tunes for the first time, that’s the place where I usually premiere my new music!
What were the best and the worst gigs you ever played and what were the funniest things ever occurred during any of your performances?
Id have to say my best performance so far was at Goodlife festival in Sydney last year! Its an underage festival but the energy was just insane and it was good to play to a huge crowd of my younger fans. The worst? Haha theres not really one that stands out to be honest but theres been a couple of times that equipment has failed while I was playing which was quite annoying!
What are you currently working and focusing on? What’s on your agenda for the near future?
Im currently working on a bunch of new original material and finishing off some collabs with Slice N Dice, Jay Karama & Toneshifterz. Im actually trying to focus on re-inventing my sound at the moment, i want to bring something fresh with my next few releases so I’m trying a lot of new things at the moment, should be interesting!
On 20th June you will make your Thailand Debut at Onyx RCA. Have you visited Thailand before? What can the Bangkok crowd expect of your upcoming performance?
I have never visited before but have heard a lot of great things and I cannot wait to be there! Expect to hear a lot of brand new tracks for the first time, hope everyone is ready to get crazy over there!
