You are an up-and-coming Dutch producer, mentioned by MTV last year as an Artist to Watch’. Now, at the age of only 19 years you travel the world to play at the biggest clubs and most respected festivals. Just recently you performed at the renowned Miami Music Week. Is it a gift or a curse to be so successful at such a young age? How do you manage to keep your feet on the ground?
I love my job, it’s amazing to play my own music all over the globe and to see people enjoy my music! I travel almost every day but when I have time off I try to keep in touch with my friends a lot. They keep me on the ground and that’’ really important to me!
You parents sent you to a music school at the early age of 5 years where you, amongst other things, got into drumming. At the age of 14 you started producing music. How did you get in touch with electronic dance music in the first place and what led finally to the signing to the prestigious Spinnin' Records label at the incredibly young age of 16 years?
I was 12 when I heard ‘The Prodigy’ I loved it, the raw electronic vibe was amazing and I think that was the first time I heard electronic music. I started making music at the age of 14 and I made a new track almost every day. I was so inspired by everything going on in the EDM scene! One day I got in touch with Spinnin’ records and they wanted to hear more music from me. It felt like a dream coming true, I sent everything I had and before I knew I got an e-mail back saying “You should come by our office to sign a contract".
You play and produce Electro- & Big Room House. How would you describe your own music in a few words?
I hate it when people put me in a box, I don’t like to give my music a name or call it a certain genre. I make a lot of melodic stuff but sometimes also hard hitting electro or big room. I need to support my own tracks 100% otherwise I won’t release it and I can only support it 100% if it’s fresh & original.
Your collaborative tracks “BFAM” (with Martin Garrix) & “Rage” (with Sander Van Doorn & Firebeatz) and your recent tracks “Angels X Demons” & “The Takedown” have been highly successful worldwide. What other tracks would you recommend to someone that is not yet familiar with your music?
I’ve got a new track coming out soon it’s called “Blinded by the Light”. I love to work with melodies and to express my feelings into music. If you listen to that track you can hear what I like to make and you will hear what I’ve been working on these past months!
What’s on your agenda for 2015 and what are you currently and focusing working on?
This week was perfect for me, I had some time off so I’ve been producing a lot. I got 2 new tracks ready! Next week I’m going to tour Asia for a week and I’m reaaaally looking forward!
Looking back on the past 4 eventful and equally successful years, what were the best and the worst gigs you played and what were the funniest things that occurred during of your performances?
Almost all my gigs are a lot of fun and I love the fact people are going to a club/festival for me. I had a lot of fun at the Canadian bus tour with Sander van Doorn & Firebeatz, those are my good friends and we had so much fun every day. Everyone should watch the after movie from our tour so you can experience our week too!
How do you feel playing 2 exclusive performances for Nights by ABSOLUT at Ark Bar Beach Club (Koh Samui) and Illuzion Nightclub (Phuket). Did you keep your Bangkok performance – and Thailand in general – in good memory? What can the Koh Samui & Phuket crowd expect of your upcoming performances?
Bangkok was amazing! I loved it so much. The crowd was amazing and there was a huge fangroup waiting for me at the airport so that was really cool! That’s why I’m really excited for my 2 upcoming shows.
