Exclusive Interview with Sian
Born in Dublin (Ireland), raised in southern Spain, Sian chose early to drop out of normal society and engage in the extraordinary. Adhering more to the avant-garde side of club culture, his tracks show an otherworldly, slow and hypnotic slant on techno. Quickly developing an oeuvre of work that has appeared on Bedrock, Sci&Tec, Soma Pokerflat, plus his own white hot new Octopus Recordings label, his tracks have gathered Beatport top ten positions and glowing reviews alike. From mags and blogs to international radio shows, his reputation for delivering huge slabs of peak time techno is snowballing.
Siam2nite had the opportunity to have an exclusive interview with Sian, shortly before his performance at Glow Nightclub on 1st June.
How did you get in touch with electronic music in the first place and what made you start DJing?
Djing kinda grew naturally out of production for me.. I was first hanging around studios and production places, working like an assistant and harassing producers and engineers to let me sit and watch, get beer, whatever. I then kinda pushed my way into getting spare time to experiment and use the gear. This led me to eventually scrounge up some money, from god knows where and buy my own gear. Starting with basic turntables, then moving into Traktor quite early.
How would you describe your music in a few simple words?
Big, Weird, Energetic
“Royal Oak” is your highest ranked track on Beatport. What other tracks would you recommend for those that are not yet familiar with your music?
Id say check out my track Purple Bang, with Carlo Lio remix, also my new EP "The Policeman Inside you" which just came out with Ambivalent and Sam Paganini remixes!
Your debut album “Before Silence” was released in June 2011 and is a mix of original tracks and parts, spanning 130 minutes and comprising over 1013 individual clips mixed into one session. What else can you tell us about the album?
It was a nightmare to create, so many hours in the studio. I don’t think I will ever attempt that again, was so many parts, broken down and put back together as a consistent file, like a live set.
Writing the tracks was interesting, knowing i would eventually take them apart and reassemble them together! i hope it was worth it for fans!
What was the best and the worst gig you ever played?
The best for me are places i haven't been before, when i played Oahu, South Africa and Australia i was stoked.
There was no real worst, i mean there can be bad gigs but in reality none gets hurt or nothing explodes!
What was the funniest thing ever occurred during any of your performances?
A girl once ran into the DJ booth on K, grabbed me and kissed me, then threw a monitor off the booth into the crowd, like the Hulk.
Also i once fell directly backwards through a tent playing a party.
On 1st June you will perform live at Glow Nightlcub here in Bangkok. Will it be your Bangkok debut? Have you been to Thailand before?
This is my first time there and i am soooo excited, I’m very stoked and pleased to make it.
Thailand is famous for its food, especially its spicy food. Are you adventurous if it comes to food? Will you give it a try?
I loooove Thai food, especially noodles, so yeah I'm down to get incinerated!
What can Bangkok’s party people expect from your performance at Glow Nightclub?
I have a tonne of new music, from my label and my own studio, so I'm curious to see how that goes down, i guess just left field, big room, quality electronic music will be my weapon to win you guys over :)
